Retention, Retention, Retention! - Volunteer Managers Workshop

Retention, Retention, Retention!
Volunteer Management Training Offered by 2-1-1 HELPLINE Give Help

Thursday, January 15th
10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Southeast Steuben County Library
(300 Nasser Civic Center Plaza #101, Corning, NY 14830)
This workshop is free and open to the public

A high rate of volunteer retention can reduce time and energy spent on recruiting and training, build volunteer loyalty and support, develop volunteers’ skills and competency, and increase community support for your organization. Retention of volunteers is no accident - it's a conscious effort and guiding principle which underlies every stage of the volunteer process from recruitment, training & orientation to daily management and recognition. Through a guided group discussion, participants will learn practical tips, techniques, and best practices for keeping and building a satisfied, dedicated, and supportive corps of volunteers.

Kevin Moss, CVA, Adult Educator and Volunteer Coordinator at Cornell Plantations, will use his years of experience to present this interactive workshop.

Area organizations receive funding for National Volunteer Week projects

By Article Submitted

As a part of New York State’s Volunteer Generation initiative, the Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier has made available over $3,800 in grants to local organizations participating in the National Volunteer Week, a portion of which will be distributed in the Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben region. This diverse group of projects will allow organizations throughout the region to celebrate National Volunteer Week through community service, volunteer recognition, and education.
“Volunteers are one of the most valuable resources that nonprofits have. They serve on boards, provide direct services, raise money, and educate the community on the needs in the region,” explains Patrick Rogers, Executive Director of the Institute for Human Services. “We are so happy to provide this funding to allow our local nonprofits to recognize and better utilize volunteers during National Volunteer Week.”
After reviewing all of the proposals, the Steering Committee of the Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier chose to fund the following programs in the Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben Region.
Chemung County:
· Chemung ARC: To have a community cookout to draw people to adopt garden beds and to become more engaged with Quatrano Park.
· Friends of Chemung River Watershed: Will lead a trash cleanup on the Lackawanna Rail Trail in Elmira.
Schuyler County:
· Catholic Charities Schuyler (Schuyler Outreach): Will have a volunteer recognition and appreciation lunch for their volunteers.
· Schuyler County Office for the Aging:  To conduct outreach events to recruit volunteers to assist in highly needed service areas.
Steuben County:
· American Red Cross – Hornell: Will have a banquet with a speaker to recognize volunteers.
· Avoca Hose Company #1: To have a volunteer recognition reception with gifts for the volunteers.
· Catholic Charities Steuben, Corning Turning Point: Will provide volunteers with lunch and a gift.
· Hornell Area Concern for Youth: To provide t-shirts to mentors for their Caring Attitudes Mentoring Program.
· Steuben Coordinated Transportation: To purchase oil changes for volunteer drivers that take clients all over the region for non-emergency medical appointments in their own vehicles.
The Regional Volunteer Center of the Southern Tier is a collaboration which promotes and enhances local volunteer efforts. Working with local nonprofits, the Center’s goal is to build the volunteer infrastructure in the region so that more people are able to make a difference. It is led by the Institute for Human Services, the United Way of Broome County, and United Way of Tompkins County. To learn more about the volunteer center or to search for opportunities dial 2-1-1 or visit www.southerntiervolunteers.org.

The Inexpensive Solution to Volunteer Protection

nonThe Inexpensive Solution to Volunteer Protection

Sometimes, volunteers have accidents - injure someone, get hurt themselves, or have an auto accident. Usually, their own insurance is not enough to take care of the damage. And the nonprofit organization's insurance does not protect the volunteer in some critical areas of risk.

Your nonprofit organization has the option of adding volunteers as additional insureds on the commercial general liability (CGL) policy. However, such an endorsement usually excludes volunteers' travel between home and the place of volunteer duty. Also, a CGL endorsement excludes coverage for claims made by one volunteer against another. Finally, the organization risks sharing its own limits of insurance - under the CGL policy - with the volunteer.

Covering volunteers under workers' compensation usually is not the wisest approach. First, a volunteer's injury would affect the claims experience of the nonprofit, which could increase workers' compensation insurance costs. Second, workers' compensation does not protect the volunteer during travel to and from their volunteer duty.

However, there is an inexpensive solution to the problem...

VIS

To protect volunteers, the Volunteers Insurance Service (VIS®) program offers the following three coverages separately or combined:
  • Up to $50,000 in accident medical reimbursement as a result of covered accident - at a cost of $3.94 per volunteer per year;
  • Up to $1,000,000 in personal liability insurance - $1.72 per volunteer per year with a minimum premium of $100;
  • For those volunteers who drive, up to $500,000 in excess automobile liability insurance above the volunteer's own insurance -$6.34 per volunteer per year with a minimum premium of $100.
Total cost per volunteer, if all coverages are selected: $12.00 per year. The organization simply insures the greatest number of volunteers it expects to have at any given time.

VIS® Membership is required in order to sign up for any of the above programs; which an annual membership fee of $135 (July-June fiscal year).

Greater Binghamton Non-Profits Search For Volunteers

WBNG reported that local non-profit organizations are looking for more volunteers to lend a hand in the community.

The Broome County Leadership Institute held this community service fair today here at the Johnson City Senior Center.

60 non profit groups were on hand, looking to recruit new volunteers.

Organizers say they stunned by how many turned out, looking for opportunities to give back.

"We didn't know what the end result would be, but we looked at the room and it's packed. And it's so rewarding that we were instrumental in hooking these people up so ultimately the people in Binghamton are well, better off," said BLI Connection Chairperson Maria Gelnett.

BLI offers 6 month leadership training program for those committed to improving the quality of living in the Greater Binghamton Area. Read more here.
