Binghamton Zoo Welcomes New Executive Director

Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park welcomes new executive director

The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park has a new leader.
Whitney Point native Jacqueline Peeler has been named the new Executive Director, taking over for Steve Contento.
Peeler worked at the zoo as a volunteer in 1986 and served as visitor services associate and seasonal zookeeper.
After leaving Ross Park, she worked at the North Carolina Zoo and the Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington, Illinois.
In 2014, she was named Director at the Henson Robinson Zoo in Springfield.
Peeler says she was ready to move back home.
"I learned so much when I was here. I wanted an opportunity to come back and be closer with my family. Most of my family is here in Binghamton and in the surrounding areas. This was a great opportunity to come back to this area," said Peeler.
Peeler says she will work towards re-establishing the Zoo's accreditation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which was lost in 2014.
Her first day was 2 weeks ago and she is familiarizing herself with the zoo, while visiting the areas and exhibits where she used to work.

Restore Opportunity Now (RON) Campaign Updates

Restore Opportunity Now (RON) Campaign Updates

As you may know, NYCON is supporting and participating in the Restore Opportunity Now campaign.
Restore Opportunity Now is a statewide effort calling for crucial investments and systemic changes to strengthen New York's nonprofit human services sector. From streamlining and legitimizing state contracting so that it is in line with fair federal rules, to revisiting existing contracts amid state-wide wage increases, there are plenty of mutually beneficial ways the state can continue to help the nonprofit community positively impact quality of life for all New Yorkers.
The proposed  Executive Budget, while acknowledging the importance of human services, unfortunately provided little in the way of strengthening the organizations and the sector responsible for lifting families out of poverty.
If you haven't already, we encourage those who support these goals to maximize our voices by joining the more than 340 organizations in the campaign. Click here.

We also encourage you to inform your board about the Restore Opportunity Now Campaign and ask them to send their own letter to Governor Cuomo in support of the initiative (also send a copy to restoreopportunity@gmail.com for a bulk re-delivery to the Governor). Please see sample language here.
Questions about this campaign? Contact Peter McCarthy, Policy Associate at NYCON at 1 (800) 515-5012.

CCPA SEMINAR: (Binghamton) Building a Sustainable Nonprofit Organization

Binghamton University’s College of Community & Public Affairs
67 Washington Street, Binghamton

Building a Sustainable Nonprofit Organization – David Campbell, PhD
Thursday, December 12, 2013 – 9:00am - 12:00 pm

How confident are you in your organization's long-term sustainability?  What steps can you take today to make sure your organization can advance its mission long into the future?  The goal of this workshop is to introduce you to a model of nonprofit sustainability planning that you can use in your organization.  The model is based on the book Nonprofit Sustainability: Making Strategic Decisions for Financial Viability. The model defines sustainability as a combination of both the impact of an organization's activities ("business lines") and the financial performance of each of those activities. The model enables users to develop a simple "matrix map" that displays the financial and program performance of an organization's activities.  The map provides the basis for sustainability planning.  The workshop will provide hands-on opportunities for participants to apply aspects of the model to their organizations (such as the identification of business lines and impact criteria). The workshop is $65/person and includes morning refreshments. To register go to:http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CCPASeminarsF2013. Contact Joann Lindstrom at 777-9178 with questions.
